Who needs recognition?

There are regulated professions and non-regulated professions.

Regulated professions - healthcare, legal advice, teaching in state schools, engineering and certain master craft workers. Regulated professions always need the certificate of official recognition regardless of your country of origin.

Non regulated professions - professions not included in regulated professions. Citizens of third countries outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland always need the recognition of qualification.

Initial advice can be obtained by calling the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees – BAMF. The hotline number is +49 30-1815-1111 and the service is available from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

You can also contact Service Center for Professional Recognition - ZSBA directly by sending an e-mail to the following address:  recognition@arbeitsagentur.de. The consultation is free of charge and non-binding.

How does the recognition procedure work?

1. Once your documents have been fully submitted, the competent German authority will examine them and it can take three to four months.

2. The recognition procedure can cost up to €600.00, or more, depending on the specific case.

3. If your professional qualification is recognized, the certificate will be sent to you.

4. In case your documents is not in acceptable situation according to German standard:

   Non- regulated professions - An assessment notice will be issued and you can gain the necessary qualification through training courses. Then, you can submit a follow-up application to obtain full recognition.

   Regulated professions - The authority in charge will decide what adaptation programme you will need to follow. Successful completion of the adaptation programme will lead to full recognition.

5. You can apply for visa for the recognition of professional qualification in order to join adaptation programme or taking a refresher training course in Germany. Further information can be found in our “Visa for the recognition of professional qualifications” section.

1. The Pro-Recognition project has set up free and non-binding contact and advice centers at ten Chambers of Commerce abroad (in Egypt, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, India, Iran, Italy, Colombia, Poland, and Vietnam) to provide in-depth advice on site. The counselors will answer questions about the recognition procedure or questions about language requirements, visas and job searches. In addition to German and English, the respective national language is spoken fluently at Pro-Recognition.

How are the procedures to make your plan happen?

The first thing you consider will be “Whether I need the visa or not?”

Please follow the below steps for the job-seeking visa.

1. Please check here to know your status clearly, whether you need to apply for visa or not.

2. Check the Requirements:

   - proof of qualification - vocational or academic training

   - Recognition of your qualification

   - If you are seeking employment in the sectors such as health-care,

   teaching, law, a professional practice permit is mandatory

   - German language skill (please refer to my post on 3 Dec)

   - Proof of living costs (E.g. a blocked account or a Declaration of

   Commitment.

3. Apply for Visa at respective German Embassy in your home country.

4. Enter Germany

The visa for job seekers can be issued for a period of up to six months. During your stay in Germany, you are allowed to work part-time for ten hours per week while looking-for full time job.

German language is required for

Visa for the recognition of foreign qualification: Level A2

Visa for seeking employment ( people with vocational qualification) : Level B1

IT Specialist without formal qualification: Level B1

Visa for training: Level B1

Visa for seeking a training palace: Level B2

Visa for studying: at least B2 depending on study program

Visa for applying for a study program: language criteria should be checked with your desired university.

Please kindly do not feel upset to shape your future life in Germany because of language barrier. German is not that difficult. If you learn it persistently, you can reach to B1 within 1 year. There is a way, there is a will.

2. If you don’t possess educational qualification, you can also submit your relevant document of working experience.

3. If your qualifications are not recognized, you can undertake further training in Germany.

4. German language is not necessary on the initial stage except medical sectors.

5. You can apply for it online. Please note: Subject to specific conditions, IT specialists may immigrate to Germany for work without recognition and without a formal qualification.

6. The recognition procedure can cost up to €600, and in individual cases more. In addition, there are often costs for translations and refresher training.

7. The procedure normally takes up 3 to 4 months . Under certain circumstances, employers are able to apply for the so-called accelerated process for skilled workers from third countries. The recognition procedure may then take only 2 months. Approach your future employer about this!

These companies depend on millions of highly skilled employees for their success. But with many Germans retiring early and Europe as a whole becoming an aging society, Germany faces a serious shortage of skilled workers.

To solve this problem, the German government has recently made it easier for skilled employees from all over the world to work and live in Germany.

Work and living in Germany has become a lot easier than going, say, to the US, Australia, or many other countries. 

Why would you want to work and live in Germany? How does Germany compare with other countries, such as the US, UK, Australia, Thailand, and others?

Here are just a few points:

Germany has one of the highest living standards in the entire world. Salaries in Germany are among the best, and compensation includes generous paid vacation and family times. 

The education system is top-notch and is mostly free (unlike in the US, for instance, where education is hugely expensive).

The healthcare system is among the most advanced, and Germany provides government-funded health insurance. Sorry, again, US and many other countries: Few match the quality and low cost of German health care, which is one reason Germans live longer and healthier lives.

Germany is welcoming of immigrants and has strong laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, religion, or country of origin. It’s also one of the safest countries to live and raise a family in. 

And with Oktoberfest approaching, let’s not forget about German beer!

If that sounds like a good possibility, let's look at a few ways you can look for a job in Germany and the kinds of work and residence visas available to you.

What country you are from does not matter, but rules may be a bit different based on your country. 

In this article, I will share some essential information.

Remark: The below information is not related to nationalities from EU, EEA and Switzerland.

1) Requirements

1.1 educational qualification

You must hold an academic or a vocational qualification.

You are IT- specialist with no educational qualification. However, you can

work in Germany, if you have working experience for 3 years within last 7

years.

Your qualifications must be acknowledged and recognized by German Authority, if they are not achieved in Germany.

Remark: Recognition of qualification is not needed for the nationalities from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro till 2023.

1.2 language requirement

Academic qualification – no language requirement except medical field

IT specialist without educational qualification – must have German language skill (B1 level)

Vocational qualification – it depends

2) How to look for job?

Option 1: You look for jobs via online German job portals: first link & second link

After receiving job offer from German employer before coming to Germany, the most important things are detailed concrete job contract and recognition of qualifications. Without them, you cannot apply for visa.

Option 2: You come to Germany with 6-month-visa to look for jobs.

Remark: The better job opportunity is mainly dependent on your qualification and occupation that match with the demanding occupational fields in Germany.

3) Visa

If you are nationality of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the USA, you do not need the visa.

Otherwise, you must apply for visa.

Please check the visa requirement.

4) Types of residence permits

Academic qualification: If you have already found an employer willing to hire you in Germany, you can work and live in the country with a “Blue Card.” This applies to other EU countries, too (sorry Ireland and Denmark, you are the exceptions).

But not just any job qualifies: Your minimum salary must be at least 3,500 euros per month in the sciences and engineering, and about 4,600 euros per month in other fields. These salaries are in line with what German college graduates typically earn.

Blue Card is issued for maximum 4 years and can be extended if the requirements are met.

And there’s more good news: You don’t need to speak German to be eligible for a German Blue Card (except in the medical fields). But if you have the below German knowledge, you can apply to German permanent residence.

A1 – can apply for PR after 33 month-working in Germany

B1 – can apply for PR after 21 month-working in Germany

Vocational qualification - If you have already found an employer willing to hire you in Germany, you can work and live in the country with a “normal work permit card”.

You can apply for permanent residence after working for 4 years. The big issue is enough income to live in Germany.

Skilled IT specialist without educational qualification - If you have already found an employer willing to hire you in Germany, you can work and live in the country with a “normal work permit card”.

You can apply for permanent residence after working for 5 years. The big issue is enough income to live in Germany.
